Day 20

Rest day Perth

We’d riden 11,000km since leaving Canberra so today was an opportunity for some TLC for our bikes.

Dave had his BMW serviced by BM Bikes in Jandakot. The crew was quick and efficient doing the service and fitting the new tyres. Their low price for the work was a very pleasant surprise.

The service interval on Neil’s Triumph (16,000km) meant he only needed new tyres as he’ll make it back to Canberra without needing a service. Although the dealer had ordered Neil’s tyres from ‘over East’, the tyres cost the same as the set he had fitted before he left Canberra.

Considering the weight of the bikes with us and all our gear (450kg) the tyres were wearing quite well. If we’d had the time later in the trip we could have waited until Adelaide, or even Geelong, to replace the tyres. Our schedule meant we didn’t have the time until Hobart however we didn’t want to risk riding the twisty roads in Tasmania with tyres which were just about worn out. It turns out replacing the tyres in Perth was the right move – read Day 29 to find out why.

We were lucky the weather was dry when we picked up our bikes because the first 100 or so km after fitting new tyres on a motorcycle always makes for ‘interesting’ riding. New tyres are slippery enough without the added challenge of riding on wet roads.

To put some kilometers on his new tyres, Neil rode to Kings Park to inspect the very impressive War Memorial and to enjoy the views over the city, then he rode towards the beach to check out the Indian Ocean.

While Neil was enjoying the scenary, Dave attended some meetings in his Perth Office.
