Day 26

Adelaide to Warrnambool 620 km

After leaving a foggy Adelaide behind, we rode down Dukes Highway to Coonalpyn. This is a very proud little community with a painted silo, mosaic artwork (screening the very clean public toilets) and murals in ‘Tunnel Vision’. In addition to the public art, the town boasts a dog park close to the highway enabling travellers to let their pooches have a run around in a safe environment.

We enjoyed a nice coffee and great sausage roll from the cafe/post office situated across from the park.

About the mosaic

Leaving Coonalpyn, we continued along the Dukes Highway to Keith where we turned onto Riddock Highway to Mount Gambier. Traffic flowed well as there were plenty of rest areas, towns and overtaking lanes along the Riddock Highway.

When in Mount Gambier we visited the Umpherston Sinkhole and Blue Lake.

Departing Mount Gambier on the Princes Highway, we were soon in Victoria. Almost immediately, we noticed the poor state of this National Highway. This section of the Princes Highway is probably the worst road we’ve ridden for the entire trip. On several occasions, there are ‘rough surface’ advisory 80km/h signs. Take note of this advice!!

We rode to Portland, Port Fairy, and then onto Warrnambool. All these towns are attractive and well worth a visit.
