Day 21

Perth to Albany 719 km

We departed Perth under cloudy sky’s and had a great run for the first hour, then the rain started. We stopped to put on our wet weather gear, and the rain stopped. It was a little cool, so we left the rain gear on as an extra insulation layer.

Due to the weather clearing up, we rode to Augusta to see Cape Leeuwin, which is the southwest point of Western Australia. The lighthouse, grounds, and scenery are must do activities. Apart from being spectacular scenery, Cape Leeuwin marks the point where the Indian and Southern oceans meet. The interruptive sign asks if people can see the junction. It was very windy, so we could not see any differences in the oceans.

Following our visit to the lighthouse, we had lunch at the Augusta bakery. While we can’t confirm the bakery’s claim to be Australia’s best, we can confirm the sausage rolls are fantastic.

The ride from Augusta to Albany is a pretty one, however the wind and wet roads required us to use a fair amount of concentration. On the few occasions we could look around, we saw lovely green pastures and hills. We did notice there were few safe pullover areas. If you are travelling in peak holiday periods, traffic could be a problem.

We stopped at Munglinup for a break. From reading the signs in the rest area, Munglinup looks like a good place to come back to.

We arrived in Albany on dusk, settled into our accommodation, and went looking for dinner. A local pointed us to Three Plenties Palace for Chinese. We both agreed the dinner was one of the best Chinese we had ever eaten. If you are looking for lunch or dinner in Albany, we strongly recommend Three Plenties Palace.
