Day 19

Meadow to Perth 700km

We started the ride in the rain, we’ve been pretty lucky with the weather up until now so we can’t complain. The rain stopped shortly after we departed only to be replaced by a strong headwind. Riding a motorcycle into a headwind is not fun and is very tiring. Due to the extra effort we made sure to have some additional breaks along the way. In addition to the rain and the wind, we also had to keep on the lookout for goats.

We were glad for a break in Geraldton. Here, we visited the HMAS Sydney 2 memorial. This is a must-see. If you can arrive by 1030, Beryl or another volunteer will take you on a free tour of the site and can point out relevances of the Memorial, which may not be appearant.

After checking out the memorial, Beryl suggested we head to Salt Dish cafe for a coffee and snack. We are so glad we listened to Beryl’s advice because the coffee was good and the ham and cheese croissant was amazing.

After leaving Geraldton, we again started battling the wind. The turbulence caused Neil’s wind jacket to unzip, so we stopped in Eneabba and stumbled upon a nice rest area with clean toilets. The community spirit in Eneabba must be high because the township is very small, and the covered picnic area and grass area are in tip top shape. Well done, Eneabba.

The wind died down as we got closer to Perth however it was replaced by dark clouds and rain. At one stage the rain was very heavy and all traffic needed to slow. We rode in on the Tonkin Highway, and at some time over the last 15 years, this has completely changed the trip all the way from Muchea. This is now dual lane and bypasses Bullsbrook, the Swan valley, and many other towns.
