Karumba to Mount Isa 558km
After a leisurely start to the day, we headed off to Mount Isa. It was a bit windy for most of the way to Normanton, but it was fine for the rest of the trip.
The road is a good condition and, surprisingly (to us), not a lot of traffic.
We caught up with Kim on his BMW ‘Vacilando Cruising’ at Bourke and Wills Roadhouse and again in Cloncurry. Kim is great for a chat, so if you see him, say hi. Sadly, we don’t expect to bump into Kim again on our Lap for Legacy because even though we are travelling in the same direction, our timelines are vastly different.
In Cloncurry we caught up with Neil’s mates Ruth and Pete from Morwell. Ruth and Pete are enjoying their nomadic lifestyle and helping out at community events across Queensland.
Peter, Neil’s mate from Scootaville 2023, rode from Mount Isa with a couple of other riders to escort us to Mount Isa. It was great to see Pete again and meet our other ‘escorts’.
The scenery in almost all of our legs continues to impress. It seems like every hour the landscape or flora changes. This is no exception on the leg from Cloncurry to Mount Isa. Ruth summed up this leg perfectly, ‘stunning and breathtaking’.
Not only did Peter ‘escort’ us to Mount Isa, but he and his lovely wife Jenny graciously put us up for the night. Peter also arranged for the Mount Isa RSL sub-branch to provide us with dinner. In addition to dinner, the sub-branch made a generous donation on our Lap for Legacy FaceBook donation page (link).
In addition to Peter’s work in the Mount Isa community, which was recognised by Peter being awarded Senior Citizen of the year in 2023, he and Jenny are raising money for Blue Dragon. Blue Dragon (link) is a charity that is rescuing trafficked children in Asia.
