Cairns to Karumba 754km
We departed Cairns in the rain and rode to Malanda. The road is in excellent condition with plenty of pull over spots. It would have been scenic and more fun if the weather was clear. There was a section of the road between the end of route 24 and the start of route 1 that is best avoided by just about any vehicle. This section is mostly potholed.
We stopped for fuel at Mount Garnet. The options were Diesel or 91, so Dave didn’t fill up. The good news was the weather cleared and the rest of the ride was completed under blue sky’s.
Our next stop was at Undara Volcanic National Park. The camp sites at the National Park look good however you can’t access the scenic views without going on an organised tour. A couple who recently completed the tour said the scenery and commentary by the guide was well worth the trip. We didn’t have the time to wait for the next tour so we departed the National Park without seeing the views.
The next stop was a Georgetown for fuel and lunch. Followed by fuel for Neil at Croydon. We stopped in Normanton for a break and met Kim, who is on his third solo ride around Australia and the second on his BMW R80. We had a great chat with Kim, and he described his bike as Dave’s great grandfather.
Apart from the potholed section mentioned above, the roads were in good condition with only the occasional encounter with roaming or, closer to Karumba, small kangaroos.
