Day 11

Renner Springs to Katherine 499km

Last night, Dave and Neil noticed four Goggomobils at the motel. This morning, they had the opportunity to chat with Bob, one of the owners. Bob explained the four Goggomobils, and yes, one of them is actually a Dart, are making the 3,000km journey from Darwin to Adelaide for a Goggomobil gathering. Bob also explained there were two engine options for Goggomobils, the standard 300cc 2 stroke or the ‘big block’ 400cc 2 strokes; all four of the vehicles were the ‘big block’ versions. We did mention that our bike engines are 3 times the capacity of their ‘big block’ models. However, Bob was not impressed. The Goggo convoy covers about 300km a day, and at that rate, Dave and Neil will have completed Western Australia, past through Adelaide, and be in Victoria before the Goggo convoy arrives. Dave and Neil wished Bob and his crew success with their trip and headed North towards Katherine.

The road to Katherine was a bit bumpy in sections however at 110km/h quite ok; hitting some of the bumps at 130km/h may have added a bit too much excitement.

There were cattle near the road and they saw another snake on the road. Dave and Neil have not seen an alive Kangaroo since leaving Karumba (and are quite happy about that).

About 100km from Katherine, Dave and Neil diverted to Mataranka hot Springs. The springs looked inviting however going for a dip will need to wait for another time.

Dave and Neil overtook several 3 and 4 trailer road trains today. These 50+m vehicles are quite impressive, and their drivers have all been aware they were being passed.

Dave and Neil arrived at the Tindal RAAF Base and are staying there for two nights.

    1. Yes, EV chargers were at random intervals all around Australia. The remote ones had around 100 solar panels and diesel generators. Check out our Day 16 post.
