Day 1

Canberra to Sydney via Bega – 654 km
We said farewell to our families then headed along Northbourn Avenue on the way to the Australian War Memorial to mark the starting point of the Lap for Legacy. Glenn, a riding mate of Neil’s, braved the icy conditions to farewell the guys on their Lap for Legacy.

The ride was a good one however the first 90 minutes the weather was very cold 🥶 and foggy. Neil’s heated gloves ran out of power around 30 minutes into the ride, so he had very cold hands. Dave’s gloves kept on working until the sun burnt the fog off, and the air temperature rapidly raised from 0 to 15 degrees.

The Monaro Highway to Cooma is in good condition and the traffic was light although there is a lot of road kill on this stretch. Leaving Cooma we turned left onto the Snowy Mountains Highway which is also in good condition. The ride down Brown Mountain is scenic and safe. Road works continue on this stretch, so we encountered traffic controls at these sites.

Once to the Princess Highway, we turned left and rode onto Narooma  where we refuelled the bikes and had a great feed at Club Narooma.

After Narooma we rode our way up the East coast via Bateman’s Bay and into Wollongong where we stopped for fuel. After a short break we continued to Sydney via Coalcliff and the Sea Cliff Bridge.

We rode to Sydney via Bega as we want to ensure our lap covers as much of the coastal areas of Australia as possible.

Australian War Memorial departure point.
Northbourne Avenue, the main street of Canberra.
Canberra to Narooma for lunch. Spoke with a couple from Canberra about our ride. They were kind enough to give us some tips about the trip from when they completed most of the lap a few years ago.
Narooma to Milton. We had a rest in Milton and spoke with a lovely lady about the great service Legacy perform and our ride.

Milton to Sydney, where we refuelled and stayed with family for the night.
